Members of the Riverside County Amateur Radio Association will participate in the national 2019 Amateur Radio Field Day exercise at Martha McLean-Anza Narrows Park, 5759 Jurupa Ave., Riverside.
The event begins 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, and runs until 11 a.m. Sunday, June 23. It is free and open to the public.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public places during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio, according to a press release from the Riverside County Amateur Radio Association.
For more than 100 years, amateur radio, also called ham radio, has allowed people to experiment with electronics and communications techniques and to provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, according to the press release.
The Field Day event demonstrates ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network.
“Ham radio functions completely independent of the internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes,” said David Isgur, communications manager for the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio, in the press release. “That’s the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage.
“Hams can literally throw a wire in a tree for an antenna, connect it to a battery, generator or solar-powered transmitter and communicate halfway around the world,” Isgur said. “Hams do this by using a layer of Earth’s atmosphere as a sort of mirror for radio waves.”
