Cleona woman enjoys world of ham radio

The Lebanon Daily News reports on radio amateur Cindy Howard KB3TOL from Cleona, PA

She took a three-day class taught by Ron Small WB2OOB, a ham radio operator from Lancaster PA and got her Technician license.

During weather emergencies, Cindy has helped out on ham radio. During the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011, she checked in every hour with her husband Bob KB3QAQ, who was running an amateur radio command post inside the county’s Emergency Management Agency for the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. She said she was able to keep in contact with her husband to tell him about weather conditions in the Cleona area.

During an ice storm about two years ago, Cindy said, ham radio operators could communicate with people even though the electric lines were down and cellphone service was interrupted.
